I shared the torrent with my roommates, and the game runs flawlessly in their PC. I don't know what's wrong with mine. When I double click the shortcut on desktop, hl2.exe appears in the task manager for a short while and then disappears. I checked the event logs and it had an exception code of 0xc0000005 (access violation) associated with hl2.exe.
I have also downloaded and applied the 3029837-to-4014252 version patch. The counter strike source does not start.
After multiple failed attempts to run the game by clicking "play-css.exe", I tried executing hl2.exe directly via command prompt with these parameters " -steam -game cstrike -appid 240 -novid". The game starts up now, but I get the message, "Steam Beta must be running to make use of Find Servers". Any attempt to start up a server with bots ends up with CD key authentication failure. So, this was also a dead end. Only you can help me now. :)

Same goes for me. I don't think absence of the required software might be the issue here. I passed on the game to my roommate who had just reinstalled windows (same copy that I am running), that means he had no additional software (apart from what came bundled in Windows) or even a patch for the game, but, miraculously the game runs fine on his system. He is one happy guy. :)
Come to think of it, he is running the exact same thing that I am running minus the anti-virus. Both my roommates do not have any anti-virus on their system, and the game ran perfectly without installing anything extra (kudos to the cracker!!!). So I guess its the anti-virus which is causing problems. Unfortunately, the paranoid baffon that I am, I am too afraid to add the game into exclusions of my anti-virus. So maybe you could try the same and run the game. Best of luck. ;)

I think you can go into settings->keyboard and then change the shortcut for console.

When I open "play-css" I get the error "Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'cstrike'. Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting. I saw that someone had the same problem and he had installed the patch into wrong folder, but I've tried installing the patch into the main folder and into the 'cstrike' folder and the same error still pops up... please help :i

hi admin, i installed the patch 3029837-to-4630212, copied it to the game folder and installed. but when i ran the game and try to play with bots, it said Server is enforcing simple material: models/error/new light1.

- install all required software listed on game topic ,
- disable User Account Control ,
- make sure your antivirus is not blocking game files (add game folder to Exceptions),
- install update patch ,
- Run game as Administrator

Properly installed game and patch and was able to play mp right away. Turned game off, restarted, now I get Steam Beta must be running. So, I thought maybe it was my AV so I turned off AV, reinstalled game and patch, still get the same error. Any ideas?

I cant play single player or multiplayer. I try booting the game and I cant run it as admin on this PC so I run it as a invoker with a bat file. Then when I try playing single player I get this error: "cd key authentication invalid for internet servers". When I try to play multiplayer I get: "Steam Beta has to be enabled" or something along the lines of steam beta. I have the main game and the patch installed in it.

NOSteam.. I only have one small problem.. when we play LAN on CSS.. we can't see each other's AVATARS, however the changed names are correct.. just the avatars are missing and only showing the default ct or t icons.. please help <3

I'm having the issue where i try to play online but the game asks me to install Steam Beta to find servers online, and when I try to play in SP it shows the error "CD Authentication invalid for internet servers". I've seen some answers that states to install both patches, but I only see the "update patch 3029837-to-6630498" that I already installed, but no other patch. I've also installed the DirectX, Framework and Visual C++ but I still get the same error.
